Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB+ FutureB-
The Bengals did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B.

You can draft well and still miss the point. The Bengals did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to interior defensive lineman, which was the need that mattered most. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

On value alone, Johnson makes the weekend a net positive. The cost of the Gore Jr. reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick24 Rnd1 Kool-Aid McKinstry
In the 24th overall pick they get an island corner, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick49 Rnd2 Ja'Tavion Sanders
A straight-up fair deal on Ja'Tavion Sanders at No. 49, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick56 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in Round 2, Pick 24 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick80 Rnd3 Johnny Wilson
A tidy little value on Johnny Wilson in the 80th pick, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick115 Rnd4 Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at the Round 4 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick151 Rnd5 Frank Gore Jr.
A premium they did not need to pay, Frank Gore Jr. a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick160 Rnd5 Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson slid further than he should have, and slot 160 is lovely value for the tight end. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick173 Rnd5 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
The board had cheaper options than Zion Tupuola-Fetui at pick 173, and it noticed. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
