Grand theft in pick 166: the Vikings steal Tracy Jr. and grade out a D-. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Vikings, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
The Vikings indulged a want in Hart while a need in tight end stayed open. That Tracy Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
Every board in the league had McCarthy lower, and that gap is the story.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Jer'Zhan Newton
In the 10th pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick20
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick37
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
They paid up for J.J. McCarthy at slot 37 when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick42
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
Tyler Nubin in the Round 2 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick106
Rnd4
MarShawn Lloyd
They took MarShawn Lloyd at par in No. 106, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick109
Rnd4
Cam Hart
A want over a need in the 109th overall pick: Cam Hart adds a cornerback while tight end keeps waiting.
Pick110
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at pick No. 110 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick130
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in No. 130 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick156
Rnd5
Xavier Thomas
No drama and no debate, Xavier Thomas went about where he belonged in slot 156. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick166
Rnd5
Tyrone Tracy Jr.
Taking Tyrone Tracy Jr. in pick 166 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick179
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
Nice patience on Luke McCaffrey, who had no business lasting to Round 6, Pick 4. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
