Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
B
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesA-
FutureB
The Commanders drew a line under the quarterback search with Williams: B. The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Caleb Williams, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
If Bywater pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Getting McGlothern where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Emeka Egbuka
Nothing to complain about; Emeka Egbuka went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick43
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
No drama and no debate, Ja'Tavion Sanders went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick51
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at pick No. 51 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick100
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni at the 100th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick141
Rnd5
Ben Bywater
A wild overpay on Ben Bywater in pick 141, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick181
Rnd6
Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett at the 181st overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick197
Rnd6
Bru McCoy
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Bru McCoy at slot 197 is the proof. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick223
Rnd7
Xavier Restrepo
They paid sticker price for Xavier Restrepo in the 223rd overall pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick244
Rnd7
Dwight McGlothern
They robbed the room for Dwight McGlothern here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
