The 49ers worked the phones like thieves and earned a A-. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent slot 252 on Thor Griffith, a name most had 64 spots down the list.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
TeSlaa falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The 49ers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Armand Membou
In pick 14 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Tyleik Williams
Tyleik Williams in the 43rd overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick75
Rnd3
Darien Porter
They took Darien Porter at par in No. 75, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick100
Rnd3
Savion Williams
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Savion Williams at the Round 3 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick113
Rnd4
Tai Felton
A tidy bit of business in slot 113, where Tai Felton graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick117
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at pick No. 117 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick138
Rnd4
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland in Round 4, Pick 36 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick147
Rnd5
Brashard Smith
Brashard Smith is a better player than No. 147 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick149
Rnd5
Logan Brown
A clean, defensible pick in pick 149 with a little surplus value in Logan Brown. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick160
Rnd5
Oronde Gadsden II
This one needs a full-page explanation: Oronde Gadsden II in pick No. 160, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick189
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
A tidy little value on JJ Pegues in slot 189, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jay Higgins
No drama and no debate, Jay Higgins went about where he belonged in the 204th pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick227
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan at the 227th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick232
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
They liked Jamon Dumas-Johnson enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 7 slot. The roster fit checks out.
Pick249
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
They read the board right and Isaac TeSlaa was the payoff at the 249th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick252
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
A big swing on Thor Griffith at pick 252, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
