Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The 49ers let Melton fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-.

Somehow the biggest item on the list survived the weekend. The 49ers never addressed running back, and it is the kind of gap that lingers. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.

Melton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The cost of the Holker reach is exactly the players who went right after him.

They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Brian Thomas Jr.
In the 31st overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63 Rnd2 Kris Jenkins
Kris Jenkins slipping to pick No. 63 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick94 Rnd3 Max Melton
Max Melton at Round 3, Pick 31 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick124 Rnd4 Javon Foster
Fair-plus on Javon Foster, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick131 Rnd4 Mason McCormick
They went early on Mason McCormick in slot 131, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick133 Rnd4 Dallin Holker
A conviction pick on Dallin Holker at No. 133 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick176 Rnd6 Dwight McGlothern
A tidy bit of business in the 176th pick, where Dwight McGlothern graded well above the range. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick211 Rnd6 Nathaniel Watson
Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 211 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick215 Rnd6 Garret Greenfield
No edge and no loss on Garret Greenfield in the 215th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick251 Rnd7 Jalen Coker
Jalen Coker at slot 251 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
