Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesC+ FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Steelers, and a B to prove it.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Steelers took Lawson Luckie a full 30 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They went 7 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick16 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
In No. 16 they get a ballhawk on the back end at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick47 Rnd2 LaNorris Sellers
LaNorris Sellers in the Round 2 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick77 Rnd3 Colton Hood
Colton Hood slid further than he should have, and the 77th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick78 Rnd3 Antonio Williams
Antonio Williams at pick No. 78 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick99 Rnd3 Nicholas Singleton
They took Nicholas Singleton at par in pick 99, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick117 Rnd4 Chase Bisontis
They jumped the gun on Chase Bisontis, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick156 Rnd5 Jacob Rodriguez
No drama and no debate, Jacob Rodriguez went about where he belonged in the 156th pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick213 Rnd6 Tree Babalade
Nothing to complain about; Tree Babalade went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick214 Rnd6 Isaiah Nwokobia
Isaiah Nwokobia in Round 6, Pick 34 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick229 Rnd7 Lawson Luckie
They talked themselves into Lawson Luckie at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
