The Bengals cashed the board's mistake on McCord: B. Somebody in No. 170 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Bengals sat still while Kyle McCord, the No. 120 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most. They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
In the 17th pick they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick49
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
A straight-up fair deal on Alfred Collins at the 49th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick81
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
The board had Maxwell Hairston higher than pick 81, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick118
Rnd4
Jaylin Noel
Somehow Jaylin Noel was still sitting there in slot 118, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick119
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
They will replay Cam Skattebo at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick142
Rnd5
Anthony Belton
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Anthony Belton in No. 142, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick154
Rnd5
Ty Robinson
By-the-book stuff, Ty Robinson at Round 5, Pick 15 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick170
Rnd5
Kyle McCord
Kyle McCord in pick No. 170 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick172
Rnd5
Cody Simon
They barely believed it either: Cody Simon still on the board at the 172nd overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
