Yves DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Patriots kept it disciplined and banked a B-. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Jordan Hall at the 246th overall pick, roughly 44 spots before his name belonged. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They banked enough surplus on Fields to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 30th pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, outstanding value to boot.
Pick62
Rnd2
Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley at No. 62 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick94
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Malachi Fields in the 94th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick129
Rnd4
Charles Jagusah
Nice patience on Charles Jagusah, who had no business lasting to the Round 4 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick130
Rnd4
Blake Miller
Blake Miller at Round 4, Pick 30 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick169
Rnd5
Lee Hunter
Lee Hunter in pick No. 169 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick191
Rnd6
Bud Clark
They took Bud Clark at par in the 191st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick201
Rnd6
Tristan Leigh
Tristan Leigh at No. 201 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick208
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
A wild overpay on Pat Coogan in slot 208, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick211
Rnd6
Brett Norfleet
Value said wait; Brett Norfleet in the 211th pick says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick246
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
Jordan Hall in pick No. 246 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
