Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesB+ FutureB
The Commanders drew a line under the quarterback search with Maye: B.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.

If Sherman pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick3 Rnd1 Drake Maye
By-the-book stuff, Drake Maye at No. 3 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick34 Rnd2 Graham Barton
They took Graham Barton at par in the 34th pick, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick36 Rnd2 Troy Franklin
A slide stopped in Round 2, Pick 4, with Troy Franklin worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick40 Rnd2 Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in pick 40 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick67 Rnd3 Christian Haynes
A reach on Christian Haynes in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick100 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
A straight-up fair deal on Khyree Jackson at pick No. 100, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick102 Rnd4 Jaden Hicks
Jaden Hicks at slot 102 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick103 Rnd4 Will Shipley
The board had cheaper options than Will Shipley at the 103rd overall pick, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick141 Rnd5 Ben Sinnott
Nothing to complain about; Ben Sinnott went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick183 Rnd6 Michael Barrett
A tidy little value on Michael Barrett in the 183rd overall pick, a step better than break-even. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick223 Rnd7 MJ Sherman
They reached a country mile for MJ Sherman at Round 7, Pick 3, and the board is aghast. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
