Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
A-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureA-
The Bears let Smith fall and pounced. Final grade: A-. If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Bears, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Smith.
Cohen has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Bottom line, with Dallas Turner leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
Dallas Turner in pick 14 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick21
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a blindside protector, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick45
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
They read the board right and J.J. McCarthy was the payoff at the 45th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick55
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
A reach on Ruke Orhorhoro in the 55th pick; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick111
Rnd4
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick122
Rnd4
Cole Bishop
You do not let a safety like Cole Bishop reach No. 122 and blink. They did not. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick135
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
A tidy bit of business in pick 135, where Theo Johnson graded well above the range. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick150
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
Javion Cohen in the 150th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick185
Rnd6
Tykee Smith
They will replay Tykee Smith at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick222
Rnd7
Eric Watts
Eric Watts in No. 222 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
