FutureA+
The phones sank the Patriots this weekend: D+. The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jordan Hall at pick No. 246 regardless, 44 picks early. Put together, it is a D+.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Reese.
The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Myles Garrett leading the way.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In Round 1, Pick 6 they get a downhill hitter at safety at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick27
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In slot 27 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick30
Rnd1
Kenyon Sadiq
In pick No. 30 they get a seam-stretching tight end at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Kayden McDonald
The board had Kayden McDonald higher than the 39th overall pick, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick62
Rnd2
A'Mauri Washington
A tidy little value on A'Mauri Washington in pick 62, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick70
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
A straight-up fair deal on Malachi Fields at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick94
Rnd3
Charles Jagusah
A real head-scratcher, Charles Jagusah in the Round 3 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick107
Rnd4
Blake Miller
Blake Miller at the 107th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick129
Rnd4
Max Iheanachor
Max Iheanachor at slot 129 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick130
Rnd4
Drew Allar
They liked Drew Allar enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 4, Pick 30. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick140
Rnd5
LJ Martin
They paid up for LJ Martin at the 140th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick145
Rnd5
Jacob Rodriguez
A reach on Jacob Rodriguez in No. 145; the board had better options right there. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick148
Rnd5
Tanner Koziol
Tanner Koziol at pick No. 148 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick169
Rnd5
Duce Robinson
Good price on Duce Robinson in pick 169, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick191
Rnd6
Lee Hunter
They paid sticker price for Lee Hunter in No. 191, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick201
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
They paid a round early for Trey Zuhn III in slot 201, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick208
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
They reached a country mile for Pat Coogan at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick211
Rnd6
Hykeem Williams
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Hykeem Williams well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick246
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
Jordan Hall at the 246th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
