FutureB-
The Panthers bled value on every deal, hence the D. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Panthers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
With linebacker, safety and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want.
Holker has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. McKinstry at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Kool-Aid McKinstry
The board had Kool-Aid McKinstry higher than the Round 2 slot, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick39
Rnd2
Keon Coleman
A reasonable price with a little left over, Keon Coleman in Round 2, Pick 7. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick65
Rnd3
Bralen Trice
Bralen Trice in slot 65 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick100
Rnd3
Maason Smith
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in No. 100 leaves linebacker, safety and other spots for later.
Pick140
Rnd5
Christian Jones
Fair-plus on Christian Jones, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick141
Rnd5
Dallin Holker
Dallin Holker at pick No. 141 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick165
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in the 165th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick177
Rnd6
Jase McClellan
Jase McClellan at pick 177 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
