Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureC
The Panthers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Panthers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

If Jackson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. A whole weekend of picks and offensive lineman is somehow still a want. The Panthers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Mustapha.

Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Marvin Harrison Jr.
In pick No. 1 they get a home-run threat at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick4 Rnd1 Brock Bowers
Brock Bowers at pick 4 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick33 Rnd2 T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat at the 33rd pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick65 Rnd3 Chris Braswell
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chris Braswell. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick68 Rnd3 Braelon Allen
No drama and no debate, Braelon Allen went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick100 Rnd3 Max Melton
Max Melton in the 100th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick101 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson in slot 101 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick104 Rnd4 James Williams
A premium they did not need to pay, James Williams a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick107 Rnd4 Adisa Isaac
They went early on Adisa Isaac in the 107th overall pick, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick138 Rnd5 Ty'Ron Hopper
A straight-up fair deal on Ty'Ron Hopper at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick164 Rnd5 Malik Mustapha
A slide stopped in pick No. 164, with Malik Mustapha worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
