Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Cowboys, and a B to prove it.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 104 spots for Jasheen Davis, and value like that does not grow back. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

That Rourke pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered. Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.

They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In the Round 1 slot they get a bell-cow for the offense, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick44 Rnd2 Matthew Golden
Matthew Golden at slot 44 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick76 Rnd3 Tate Ratledge
By-the-book stuff, Tate Ratledge at the 76th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick158 Rnd5 Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander in No. 158 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick170 Rnd5 Mello Dotson
You do not let a cornerback like Mello Dotson reach pick No. 170 and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick172 Rnd5 Billy Bowman Jr.
Billy Bowman Jr. at Round 5, Pick 33 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick174 Rnd5 Jack Kiser
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jack Kiser this early at No. 174. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick190 Rnd6 Jake Briningstool
Jake Briningstool in Round 6, Pick 12 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick216 Rnd6 Kurtis Rourke
Somehow Kurtis Rourke was still sitting there in slot 216, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick237 Rnd7 Chase Lundt
Chase Lundt at pick 237 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick249 Rnd7 Clay Webb
No edge and no loss on Clay Webb in the Round 7 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick257 Rnd7 Jasheen Davis
Jasheen Davis at the 257th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
