Draft Grade — Texans

The Texans found their guy under center in Penix Jr.: D. The Texans spent real capital to be 41 picks early on Javon Solomon, and the board is going to hold them to it.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. So much rides on Michael Penix Jr. that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Solomon pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at running back, edge rusher and other spots. They banked enough surplus on Fisher to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Michael Penix Jr.
In pick 9 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick59
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy in the 59th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick75
Rnd3
Javon Solomon
A curious use of Round 3, Pick 11. Running back, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
Pick86
Rnd3
Blake Fisher
A tidy bit of business in No. 86, where Blake Fisher graded well above the range. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick109
Rnd4
Mekhi Wingo
By-the-book stuff, Mekhi Wingo at slot 109 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick122
Rnd4
Sataoa Laumea
Fair-plus on Sataoa Laumea, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick126
Rnd4
Josh Newton
Josh Newton at the 126th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
