FutureB-
The 49ers won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B+. The 49ers put a flag in the ground for Jalin Conyers, 134 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
The Martinez value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In the 25th pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori slipping to the Round 2 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at pick 43 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins in the 75th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick89
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
They paid sticker price for Danny Stutsman in pick No. 89, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick109
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
No drama and no debate, Jordan Phillips went about where he belonged in slot 109. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo in the 113th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick132
Rnd4
O'Donnell Fortune
O'Donnell Fortune at the Round 4 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick138
Rnd4
Aeneas Peebles
A straight-up fair deal on Aeneas Peebles at pick 138, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick147
Rnd5
Hollin Pierce
A offensive lineman of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 9 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick166
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A premium they did not need to pay, JJ Pegues a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick179
Rnd6
Willie Lampkin
Value with a capital V on Willie Lampkin in pick No. 179, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick187
Rnd6
Damien Martinez
They robbed the room for Damien Martinez here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick192
Rnd6
Donovan Edwards
A tidy bit of business in the 192nd pick, where Donovan Edwards graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick216
Rnd6
Nohl Williams
Circle this one: Nohl Williams at the 216th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick226
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
They took Isaac TeSlaa at par in pick No. 226, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick230
Rnd7
Clay Webb
They went early on Clay Webb in pick 230, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick241
Rnd7
Jalin Conyers
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jalin Conyers in slot 241, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick249
Rnd7
Garrett Dellinger
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Garrett Dellinger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
