Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
C
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
The phones sank the Commanders this weekend: C. The tape said wait; the Commanders did not. Ashton Gillotte went at pick No. 61, a good 35 picks before the board was ready. It nets out a thoroughly average C.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Johnson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
If Will Johnson and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In No. 29 they get a press-man option on the boundary, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick61
Rnd2
Ashton Gillotte
Ashton Gillotte at slot 61 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick86
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
They barely believed it either: Cameron Williams still on the board at the 86th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick125
Rnd4
LeQuint Allen
They jumped the gun on LeQuint Allen, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick128
Rnd4
Kobe King
They took Kobe King at par in the 128th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick181
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dont'e Thornton Jr.. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick205
Rnd6
Jaylen Reed
Value with a capital V on Jaylen Reed in Round 6, Pick 29, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick245
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton in the Round 7 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
