Draft Grade — Saints
Overall F
ValueB+ NeedB TradesF FutureD-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Saints for Paul Jr.: F.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Saints would have aced it. Jimmy Horn Jr. at pick No. 254 is 43 spots clear of where he belonged. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.

On value alone, Paul Jr. makes the weekend a net positive. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.

The Mukuba pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.

Pick Analysis
Pick10 Rnd1 Will Johnson
Will Johnson in the 10th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick39 Rnd2 Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks in the Round 2 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick41 Rnd2 Tyler Warren
They took Tyler Warren at par in slot 41, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick46 Rnd2 Matthew Golden
A straight-up fair deal on Matthew Golden at the 46th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick65 Rnd3 Kaleb Johnson
Somehow Kaleb Johnson was still sitting there in slot 65, and they pounced on premier running back value. It fills a real need, too.
Pick71 Rnd3 Jihaad Campbell
Steal is underselling it; Jihaad Campbell at the 71st overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick82 Rnd3 Colston Loveland
Colston Loveland at pick No. 82 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick103 Rnd4 Andrew Mukuba
A want over a need in the Round 4 slot: Andrew Mukuba adds a safety while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick129 Rnd4 Jake Majors
Jake Majors at pick 129 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick182 Rnd6 Chris Paul Jr.
Circle this one: Chris Paul Jr. at No. 182 is a fall that decides a draft. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick251 Rnd7 Shilo Sanders
Nothing to complain about; Shilo Sanders went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick254 Rnd7 Jimmy Horn Jr.
Value said wait; Jimmy Horn Jr. in Round 7, Pick 38 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
