FutureA+
The phones sank the Raiders this weekend: D+. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Raiders shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
With edge rusher, tight end and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. Reaching for Thornton Jr. left real value on the table behind him.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In the 12th overall pick they get a ballhawk on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick55
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson at the 55th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick68
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson in No. 68 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick86
Rnd3
Barrett Carter
Barrett Carter in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick108
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, tight end and other spots still to address, they spent pick 108 on Smael Mondon Jr., a linebacker they were not short of.
Pick117
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
A clean, defensible pick in Round 4, Pick 15 with a little surplus value in Cam Skattebo. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick143
Rnd5
Kurtis Rourke
Fair-plus on Kurtis Rourke, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick158
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in slot 158 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick213
Rnd6
Jason Marshall Jr.
Jason Marshall Jr. slid further than he should have, and pick No. 213 is lovely value for the cornerback. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick215
Rnd6
Caleb Ransaw
They read the board right and Caleb Ransaw was the payoff at pick 215. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick222
Rnd7
R.J. Mickens
A slide stopped in No. 222, with R.J. Mickens worth more than the price. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
