Nobody dealt better than the Jets this weekend: B-. The rest of the league had time to spare on Carson Beck; the Jets did not wait, grabbing him 88 spots ahead at Round 3, Pick 13. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Tate falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The Jets paired the rookies with proven help, CeeDee Lamb leading the way.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In slot 7 they get a rangy last line of defense at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36
Rnd2
Carnell Tate
A slide stopped in pick No. 36, with Carnell Tate worth more than the price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick46
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
A straight-up fair deal on Sonny Styles at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick77
Rnd3
Carson Beck
Carson Beck in the 77th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick178
Rnd5
Aamil Wagner
A reasonable price with a little left over, Aamil Wagner in the 178th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick189
Rnd6
Nolan Rucci
A wild overpay on Nolan Rucci in pick 189, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick207
Rnd6
James Smith
They left a pile of value on the table to take James Smith this early at the 207th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick209
Rnd6
Luke Altmyer
They jumped the gun on Luke Altmyer, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick240
Rnd7
Bear Alexander
The board had cheaper options than Bear Alexander at the Round 7 slot, and it noticed. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick254
Rnd7
Brandon Inniss
They read the board right and Brandon Inniss was the payoff at Round 7, Pick 39. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
