Chill DRAFTING FOR THESteelers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Steelers. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Steelers reached some 40 spots for Bear Alexander, and value like that does not grow back.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Jagusah pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and tight end. The Mateer pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Jordyn Tyson
In pick 16 they get a true top target. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick47
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
No drama and no debate, Olaivavega Ioane went about where he belonged in the 47th overall pick. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick77
Rnd3
A.J. Harris
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and A.J. Harris at Round 3, Pick 13 is the proof. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick78
Rnd3
John Mateer
Somehow John Mateer was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick99
Rnd3
Kaytron Allen
They paid a round early for Kaytron Allen in slot 99, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick117
Rnd4
Charles Jagusah
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Charles Jagusah at offensive lineman with edge rusher and tight end open.
Pick133
Rnd4
Blake Miller
A curious use of Round 4, Pick 33. Edge rusher and tight end needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Blake Miller did not.
Pick156
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun at No. 156 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick213
Rnd6
Trebor Pena
A reach on Trebor Pena in the 213th overall pick; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick214
Rnd6
Amare Campbell
They reached a country mile for Amare Campbell at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick218
Rnd7
Bear Alexander
A big swing on Bear Alexander at pick 218, well ahead of any board in the building. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick229
Rnd7
Khalil Barnes
By-the-book stuff, Khalil Barnes at the 229th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
