FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Commanders to a D-. The rest of the league had time to spare on Jalen Thompson; the Commanders did not wait, grabbing him 78 spots ahead at Round 7, Pick 10. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Lew pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Caleb Downs
In slot 9 they get a rangy last line of defense. Need was not the driver here.
Pick42
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
They took Sonny Styles at par in the 42nd pick, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick71
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing A'Mauri Washington in No. 71. It fills a real need, too.
Pick74
Rnd3
Connor Lew
Connor Lew at the 74th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick132
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson slid further than he should have, and pick 132 is lovely value for the cornerback. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick145
Rnd5
Jadarian Price
They read the board right and Jadarian Price was the payoff at the Round 5 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick148
Rnd5
Charles Jagusah
A tidy bit of business in the 148th pick, where Charles Jagusah graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick170
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
By-the-book stuff, Davison Igbinosun at slot 170 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick189
Rnd6
Duce Robinson
A clean, defensible pick in No. 189 with a little surplus value in Duce Robinson. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick198
Rnd6
Xavier Nwankpa
Good price on Xavier Nwankpa in the 198th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick223
Rnd7
Kalil Alexander
A big swing on Kalil Alexander at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick226
Rnd7
Jalen Thompson
Jalen Thompson at pick No. 226 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
