Draft Grade — Dolphins
Overall
B+
ValueA-
NeedB-
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Dolphins let Simon fall and pounced. Final grade: B+. You could see the war room lean forward. Cody Simon at the 223rd overall pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
Every board in the league had Mertz lower, and that gap is the story. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In the 20th overall pick they get an island corner at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Pick48
Rnd2
Xavier Restrepo
No drama and no debate, Xavier Restrepo went about where he belonged in slot 48. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick52
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker at pick No. 52 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick84
Rnd3
Kaleb Johnson
They robbed the room for Kaleb Johnson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick98
Rnd3
Jake Majors
They did well to land Jake Majors in the Round 3 slot, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick99
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba in No. 99 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick115
Rnd4
Evan Stewart
They read the board right and Evan Stewart was the payoff at Round 4, Pick 14. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick149
Rnd5
Kevin Winston Jr.
The board fumbled Kevin Winston Jr. all the way to pick 149, and they scooped it up. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick156
Rnd5
Mason Taylor
Steal is underselling it; Mason Taylor at pick 156 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick223
Rnd7
Cody Simon
Taking Cody Simon in the 223rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick232
Rnd7
Graham Mertz
A wild overpay on Graham Mertz in the 232nd pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick251
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
The board had Shilo Sanders higher than Round 7, Pick 37, and the safety fell to them anyway. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
