Thevolak DRAFTING FOR THEPackers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Packers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Packers: B-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took McKade Mettauer a full 24 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
With quarterback, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. On value alone, Williams makes the weekend a net positive.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Jared Verse
In the Round 1 slot they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick41
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
They did well to land Chris Braswell in Round 2, Pick 9, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick57
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
A straight-up fair deal on T'Vondre Sweat at the 57th pick, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Pick88
Rnd3
Mike Sainristil
Mike Sainristil at pick No. 88 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick92
Rnd3
Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith at the 92nd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick125
Rnd4
Javon Foster
No edge and no loss on Javon Foster in No. 125; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick135
Rnd4
James Williams
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. James Williams in No. 135 leaves quarterback, wide receiver and other spots for later.
Pick203
Rnd6
Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini at the 203rd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick217
Rnd6
Miyan Williams
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Miyan Williams in Round 6, Pick 42, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick219
Rnd6
Maurice Smith
A reach on Maurice Smith in pick No. 219; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick246
Rnd7
McKade Mettauer
McKade Mettauer at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
