The jury is out on the Raiders. For now, C+. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Raiders took Hunter Wohler a full 40 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Raiders paired the rookies with proven help, Odafe Oweh leading the way.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Jihaad Campbell
In the 24th pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, even if it was a touch early. More want than need.
Pick27
Rnd1
Tyler Booker
In pick 27 they get protection for the quarterback, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick37
Rnd2
Luther Burden III
Luther Burden III at the Round 2 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick68
Rnd3
Xavier Watts
They barely believed it either: Xavier Watts still on the board at No. 68. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick97
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cam Skattebo. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick108
Rnd4
Will Howard
A reasonable price with a little left over, Will Howard in the 108th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick143
Rnd5
Ollie Gordon II
A real head-scratcher, Ollie Gordon II in slot 143 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick215
Rnd6
Isaac TeSlaa
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Isaac TeSlaa. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick222
Rnd7
Hunter Wohler
This one needs a full-page explanation: Hunter Wohler in the 222nd overall pick, miles early. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
