The 49ers robbed the room for Hook. Final grade: B-. Somebody in the Round 7 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Maxen Hook, the No. 213 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Reaching for Walker left real value on the table behind him. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
The veteran additions, Dre Greenlaw chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
James Pearce Jr.
In pick No. 27 they get a premier pass rusher. A real need, handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
Tetairoa McMillan
Tetairoa McMillan in the 33rd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick43
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
A quiet steal in the 43rd overall pick: Omarion Hampton for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick50
Rnd2
Deone Walker
Deone Walker at the Round 2 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick52
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Somehow Nick Emmanwori was still sitting there in pick 52, and they pounced on premier safety value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick75
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
They took Ozzy Trapilo at par in No. 75, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick76
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
Fair-plus on Tate Ratledge, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick100
Rnd3
Tai Felton
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tai Felton. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick113
Rnd4
Zy Alexander
Zy Alexander in No. 113 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick129
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips at Round 4, Pick 27 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Jake Majors at pick 138 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick149
Rnd5
Emery Jones Jr.
A tidy little value on Emery Jones Jr. in pick No. 149, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick160
Rnd5
Pat Bryant
They did well to land Pat Bryant in slot 160, just ahead of his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick204
Rnd6
Thomas Fidone II
Thomas Fidone II in the 204th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick227
Rnd7
Kyle Monangai
The board had Kyle Monangai higher than the Round 7 slot, and the running back fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Maxen Hook
They will replay Maxen Hook at the 249th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick252
Rnd7
Jabbar Muhammad
A straight-up fair deal on Jabbar Muhammad at slot 252, value and slot in agreement. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
