Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueA NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Hurst should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a B.

The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Shadre Hurst, pick No. 186, roughly 68 picks past where he belonged. The bottom line is a respectable B.

The cost of the Johnson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. They trusted the board more than the depth chart.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick24 Rnd1 Jeremiah Smith
In pick No. 24 they get a No. 1 receiver, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick55 Rnd2 A'Mauri Washington
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at No. 55 is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick86 Rnd3 Anthony Smith
They went early on Anthony Smith in slot 86, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick123 Rnd4 Anthonie Knapp
Anthonie Knapp in pick 123 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick161 Rnd5 Jaylen McClain
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Jaylen McClain in Round 5, Pick 24, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick186 Rnd6 Shadre Hurst
Steal is underselling it; Shadre Hurst at the 186th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick210 Rnd6 Horace Lockett
Horace Lockett slipping to the 210th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick251 Rnd7 Sammy Omosigho
A reasonable price with a little left over, Sammy Omosigho in the Round 7 slot. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick257 Rnd7 Jaleel Johnson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaleel Johnson in pick No. 257, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
