The Steelers cashed the board's mistake on Golday: B-. There is a lot to like until you notice interior defensive lineman is still a hole. The Steelers never got to the one that mattered most. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They banked enough surplus on Golday to cover a lot of smaller sins. They will need Carmona to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
On the needs board they went 7 of 9, with quarterback the one that mattered most. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Chris Brazzell II
They paid sticker price for Chris Brazzell II in slot 31, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick53
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
Olaivavega Ioane at No. 53 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick63
Rnd2
Will Lee III
A clean, defensible pick in the 63rd pick with a little surplus value in Will Lee III. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick76
Rnd3
Ja'Kobi Lane
Value with a capital V on Ja'Kobi Lane in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick85
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley slid further than he should have, and pick No. 85 is lovely value for the safety. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jake Golday
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Jake Golday in pick 99, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick121
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
Tacario Davis in the Round 4 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick136
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
A slide stopped in Round 4, Pick 36, with Trinidad Chambliss worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick160
Rnd5
Aamil Wagner
By-the-book stuff, Aamil Wagner at No. 160 squarely in line with his ranking. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick170
Rnd5
Lander Barton
No drama and no debate, Lander Barton went about where he belonged in the 170th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick213
Rnd6
Barion Brown
Barion Brown in pick 213 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick214
Rnd6
Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona in the 214th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick224
Rnd7
Lawson Luckie
Lawson Luckie at pick No. 224 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick237
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
Riley Mahlman at slot 237 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
