Draft Grade — Commanders

Good, not great, for the Commanders: B. The Dont'e Thornton Jr. pick is the one that will follow the Commanders into the fall. They took him 57 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The Porter pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
The trade work was a quiet net positive.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In the 31st pick they get a downhill hitter at safety, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick66
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
No edge and no loss on Cameron Williams in slot 66; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick95
Rnd3
Darien Porter
Steal is underselling it; Darien Porter at the 95th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick128
Rnd4
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They reached into another round for Dont'e Thornton Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick170
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
A quiet steal in No. 170: Bhayshul Tuten for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
Pick205
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
They read the board right and Oronde Gadsden II was the payoff at the Round 6 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick226
Rnd7
Karene Reid
The board had Karene Reid higher than the 226th overall pick, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick245
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
Value said wait; Hayden Conner in No. 245 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
