Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The Cowboys cashed the board's mistake on Williams: B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Mykel Williams had no business being available in Round 2, Pick 12, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card.

Howard has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a centerpiece for the ground game, outstanding value to boot.
Pick44 Rnd2 Mykel Williams
Mykel Williams in the 44th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick76 Rnd3 Will Howard
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Will Howard well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
Pick149 Rnd5 Cody Simon
They barely believed it either: Cody Simon still on the board at pick 149. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick174 Rnd5 O'Donnell Fortune
They will replay O'Donnell Fortune at pick No. 174 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick204 Rnd6 KeAndre Lambert-Smith
Nothing to complain about; KeAndre Lambert-Smith went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211 Rnd6 Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins is a better player than slot 211 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick217 Rnd7 Caleb Ransaw
They read the board right and Caleb Ransaw was the payoff at No. 217. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick239 Rnd7 Jermari Harris
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jermari Harris in the 239th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick247 Rnd7 John Williams
John Williams at the 247th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
