The Lions did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Lions did exactly that with Eric Gentry in Round 7, Pick 6.
The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On the needs board they went 5 of 9, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Olaivavega Ioane
In pick 20 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
J.C. Davis
They reached into another round for J.C. Davis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick112
Rnd4
Max Llewellyn
Max Llewellyn at slot 112 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick118
Rnd4
Kyle Louis
Kyle Louis at pick No. 118 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick125
Rnd4
Kaleb Proctor
Value said wait; Kaleb Proctor in Round 4, Pick 25 says they were not listening. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick131
Rnd4
Sam Roush
Sam Roush in the 131st overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick155
Rnd5
Matt Gulbin
Matt Gulbin in the Round 5 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick186
Rnd6
VJ Payne
A conviction pick on VJ Payne at pick 186 that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick203
Rnd6
Bud Clark
Bud Clark at the 203rd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick212
Rnd6
Nick Barrett
This one needs a full-page explanation: Nick Barrett in No. 212, miles early. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick222
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
Eric Gentry at slot 222 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
