Draft Grade — Commanders

Pieper should have been long gone. The Commanders pounced, and earned a B.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Kade Pieper got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at the 73rd pick. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.

The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.

The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.

Pick Analysis
Pick7 Rnd1 Matayo Uiagalelei
In No. 7 they get a bendy edge with upside. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Will Echoles
Will Echoles at the 38th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick73 Rnd3 Kade Pieper
You do not let an offensive lineman like Kade Pieper reach pick 73 and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick109 Rnd4 Jaylen McClain
Jaylen McClain is a better player than Round 4, Pick 8 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick145 Rnd5 Tony Rojas
Tony Rojas slipping to pick No. 145 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick185 Rnd6 Xavier Lucas
They let Xavier Lucas come to them and pounced at the 185th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick230 Rnd7 Mason Curtis
Value with a capital V on Mason Curtis in the Round 7 slot, a genuine coup. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
