Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureB
Echoles should have been long gone. The Commanders pounced, and earned a B+.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Commanders watched Will Echoles slide 39 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.

The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick Analysis
Pick10 Rnd1 Dylan Stewart
In pick No. 10 they get juice off the edge. A real need, handled.
Pick57 Rnd2 Will Echoles
The board fumbled Will Echoles all the way to the Round 2 slot, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick71 Rnd3 Jelani McDonald
A tidy bit of business in No. 71, where Jelani McDonald graded well above the range. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick100 Rnd3 Kade Pieper
The board had Kade Pieper higher than the 100th overall pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick145 Rnd5 Justin Evans
Circle this one: Justin Evans at pick 145 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick162 Rnd5 Jermaine Mathews Jr.
A slide stopped in the 162nd pick, with Jermaine Mathews Jr. worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick185 Rnd6 Payton Pierce
Payton Pierce slid further than he should have, and slot 185 is lovely value for the linebacker. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick196 Rnd6 Andrew Rappleyea
Nothing to complain about; Andrew Rappleyea went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick223 Rnd7 Jay'Vion Cole
Jay'Vion Cole is a better player than slot 223 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
