Draft Grade — Commanders

Larceny in the 229th overall pick lands the Commanders a B, Johnson and all.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Tao Johnson got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at Round 7, Pick 8. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Cam Coleman
In slot 8 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick40 Rnd2 Jamari Johnson
No drama and no debate, Jamari Johnson went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick72 Rnd3 Kelley Jones
They will replay Kelley Jones at the 72nd pick for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick110 Rnd4 Jaylen McClain
Jaylen McClain slid further than he should have, and No. 110 is lovely value for the safety. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick169 Rnd5 Elijah Paige
Elijah Paige in pick 169 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick188 Rnd6 Braelin Moore
Braelin Moore in the 188th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick209 Rnd6 Jayden Virgin-Morgan
They barely believed it either: Jayden Virgin-Morgan still on the board at Round 6, Pick 29. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick229 Rnd7 Tao Johnson
Somehow Tao Johnson was still sitting there in pick No. 229, and they pounced on premier safety value. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
