Draft Grade — Lions
Overall B+
ValueA+ NeedB+ TradesB FutureB-
The Lions let Delane fall and pounced. Final grade: B+.

Call it larceny. Mansoor Delane sat on the board until No. 189, and the Lions did not need to be asked twice.

The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The trade work was a quiet net positive. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick19 Rnd1 Spencer Fano
In pick 19 they get protection for the quarterback, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick50 Rnd2 Jake Slaughter
Value with a capital V on Jake Slaughter in the 50th overall pick, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick83 Rnd3 Jermod McCoy
Taking Jermod McCoy in No. 83 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick118 Rnd4 David Bailey
They barely believed it either: David Bailey still on the board at pick No. 118. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick136 Rnd4 Fernando Mendoza
They will replay Fernando Mendoza at the 136th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick158 Rnd5 LT Overton
LT Overton at slot 158 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick165 Rnd5 Dani Dennis-Sutton
The board fumbled Dani Dennis-Sutton all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick189 Rnd6 Mansoor Delane
A cornerback of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 9 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick203 Rnd6 Derrick Moore
Derrick Moore in No. 203 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick223 Rnd7 Whit Weeks
Whit Weeks in pick 223 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
