Draft Grade — Bears

FutureB-
The Bears worked the phones like thieves and earned a B. The real work happened on the phones. The Bears fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. They will need Jones to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Fashanu at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Jared Verse
By-the-book stuff, Jared Verse at No. 9 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick11
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Pick23
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In the 23rd overall pick they get a building block for the line, outstanding value to boot.
Pick24
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
In the 24th pick they get a weapon on the perimeter, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick122
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at pick 122 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick169
Rnd5
Walter Rouse
Walter Rouse at slot 169 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The roster fit checks out.
Pick218
Rnd6
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
A tidy little value on Zion Tupuola-Fetui in pick No. 218, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick228
Rnd7
Frank Gore Jr.
Good price on Frank Gore Jr. in Round 7, Pick 8, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick245
Rnd7
Dominique Hampton
A slide stopped in No. 245, with Dominique Hampton worth more than the price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick250
Rnd7
Matthew Jones
They left a pile of value on the table to take Matthew Jones this early at Round 7, Pick 30. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
