Jdj029 DRAFTING FOR THESteelers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B
ValueA
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
Mendoza is the Steelers' new face under center. Grade: B. Call it larceny. Keith Abney II sat on the board until pick 121, and the Steelers did not need to be asked twice. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
Fernando Mendoza is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They are betting Foster proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a long-term answer under center at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick53
Rnd2
Caleb Downs
Caleb Downs at the Round 2 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick76
Rnd3
Chris Bell
Chris Bell in the 76th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick85
Rnd3
Caleb Banks
Caleb Banks at No. 85 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick99
Rnd3
Dillon Thieneman
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Dillon Thieneman in the 99th pick, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick121
Rnd4
Keith Abney II
They robbed the room for Keith Abney II here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick135
Rnd4
Hezekiah Masses
A reasonable price with a little left over, Hezekiah Masses in pick No. 135. The roster fit checks out.
Pick159
Rnd5
Jaeden Roberts
Jaeden Roberts in Round 5, Pick 21 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick213
Rnd6
Ephesians Prysock
The board fumbled Ephesians Prysock all the way to slot 213, and they scooped it up. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick214
Rnd6
Marlin Klein
You do not let a tight end like Marlin Klein reach the Round 6 slot and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jimmy Rolder
Jimmy Rolder in the Round 7 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick237
Rnd7
Bryce Foster
Bryce Foster at pick No. 237 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
