0987 DRAFTING FOR THEJets
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Jets
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Jets checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. Some picks age like wine; Patrick Payton at pick No. 175 will need to, sitting 72 spots clear of his grade.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Spending an early pick on linebacker with running back open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In the 2nd pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick16
Rnd1
Olaivavega Ioane
They paid a round early for Olaivavega Ioane in No. 16, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick33
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman in the 33rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick44
Rnd2
Keith Abney II
Keith Abney II in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick103
Rnd4
Jaishawn Barham
A want over a need in pick No. 103: Jaishawn Barham adds a linebacker while running back keeps waiting.
Pick175
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton in slot 175 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick178
Rnd5
Pat Coogan
A reach for Pat Coogan in slot 178; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick192
Rnd6
Zxavian Harris
Value said wait; Zxavian Harris in the 192nd pick says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick206
Rnd6
Eric McAlister
Value with a capital V on Eric McAlister in pick 206, a genuine coup. The roster fit checks out.
Pick209
Rnd6
Josh Moten
By-the-book stuff, Josh Moten at the 209th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick218
Rnd7
Miles Kitselman
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Miles Kitselman. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick242
Rnd7
Cole Payton
Fair-plus on Cole Payton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
