FutureA+
The Bears drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: C. The tape said wait; the Bears did not. Tanor Bortolini went at pick 122, a good 65 picks before the board was ready. It lands right in the middle: a C, no more, no less.
Everything downstream of J.J. McCarthy depends on J.J. McCarthy, and the building knows it. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
The Bishop pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback still on the board.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
A big swing on J.J. McCarthy at pick No. 10, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick20
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
They liked Troy Franklin enough to skip the value, taking him in the 20th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick64
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
No drama and no debate, Ruke Orhorhoro went about where he belonged in pick 64. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick72
Rnd3
Calen Bullock
A reach on Calen Bullock in No. 72; the board had better options right there. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick75
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
A wild overpay on Brenden Rice in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick76
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at slot 76 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
Pick84
Rnd3
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at slot 84 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick95
Rnd3
Cole Bishop
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 95th pick on Cole Bishop with cornerback unsolved.
Pick111
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at pick 111 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick121
Rnd4
Javion Cohen
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Javion Cohen. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick122
Rnd4
Tanor Bortolini
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tanor Bortolini this early at pick No. 122. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick136
Rnd4
Ainias Smith
By-the-book stuff, Ainias Smith at the 136th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick145
Rnd5
Tommy Eichenberg
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tommy Eichenberg. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick147
Rnd5
Justin Eboigbe
They paid sticker price for Justin Eboigbe in No. 147, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick173
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
They reached into another round for Joe Milton III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
