A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a C+. The 49ers spent real capital to be 126 picks early on Jasheen Davis, and the board is going to hold them to it. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Jahdae Barron
In pick 17 they get an island corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick20
Rnd1
Luther Burden III
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick49
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori in the 49th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick75
Rnd3
Omarr Norman-Lott
By-the-book stuff, Omarr Norman-Lott at the 75th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick99
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild in pick No. 99 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick117
Rnd4
Demetrius Knight Jr.
They will replay Demetrius Knight Jr. at No. 117 for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick137
Rnd4
Elijah Arroyo
A tight end of that caliber at the 137th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick185
Rnd6
Jared Wilson
Taking Jared Wilson in pick No. 185 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick191
Rnd6
Jasheen Davis
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jasheen Davis. It fills a real need, too.
Pick226
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick230
Rnd7
J.C. Davis
A real head-scratcher, J.C. Davis in slot 230 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick249
Rnd7
Ollie Gordon II
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ollie Gordon II in pick 249, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick255
Rnd7
Graham Mertz
They reached into another round for Graham Mertz, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
