Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B-
ValueB+ NeedB TradesD+ FutureB-
The Commanders let Pieper fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-.

When a board-topper like Kade Pieper slides to slot 73, you do not overthink it, and the Commanders did not. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

Spending an early pick on safety with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick17 Rnd1 Cam Coleman
In No. 17 they get a matchup problem out wide, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa
The board fumbled Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa all the way to the 38th overall pick, and they scooped it up. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick73 Rnd3 Kade Pieper
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Kade Pieper in pick No. 73, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick89 Rnd3 Jamari Sharpe
They took Jamari Sharpe at par in slot 89, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick109 Rnd4 Jaylen McClain
Jaylen McClain slipping to the Round 4 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick137 Rnd4 Marcus Neal Jr.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Marcus Neal Jr. at safety with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open.
Pick145 Rnd5 Jayden Jackson
Jayden Jackson in Round 5, Pick 7 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick148 Rnd5 Luke Reynolds
By-the-book stuff, Luke Reynolds at pick 148 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick185 Rnd6 Jayden Virgin-Morgan
They paid sticker price for Jayden Virgin-Morgan in slot 185, and that is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick230 Rnd7 Malachi Breland
Malachi Breland in Round 7, Pick 9 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
