Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall A-
ValueB+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureB+
The Commanders cashed the board's mistake on McClain: A-.

Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Commanders came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.

McClain at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The Nolan Smith pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.

In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 David Stone
Value with a capital V on David Stone in the 25th overall pick, a genuine coup. The roster fit checks out.
Pick54 Rnd2 Ryan Wingo
Ryan Wingo at pick No. 54 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick68 Rnd3 Jamari Sharpe
A straight-up fair deal on Jamari Sharpe at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick71 Rnd3 Jelani McDonald
The board had Jelani McDonald higher than the 71st pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick129 Rnd4 Greg Johnson
They robbed the room for Greg Johnson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick145 Rnd5 Jaylen McClain
Circle this one: Jaylen McClain at Round 5, Pick 7 is a fall that decides a draft. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick185 Rnd6 Niki Prongos
They took Niki Prongos at par in slot 185, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick196 Rnd6 Jaden Platt
Jaden Platt at the Round 6 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick223 Rnd7 Jay'Vion Cole
Jay'Vion Cole is a better player than Round 7, Pick 7 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
