Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D
ValueB+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The 49ers bet the future on Ward. The board says D.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Demetrius Knight Jr. got past him. The 49ers do not have to explain a thing at pick 137.

Cam Ward gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Slackman has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.

They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Cam Ward
In pick No. 11 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Pick17 Rnd1 Jahdae Barron
In the 17th pick they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick43 Rnd2 Emeka Egbuka
Emeka Egbuka slid further than he should have, and pick No. 43 is lovely value for the wide receiver. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick49 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
Taking Nick Emmanwori in Round 2, Pick 17 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick75 Rnd3 Tyleik Williams
Tyleik Williams at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick99 Rnd3 Gunnar Helm
The board fumbled Gunnar Helm all the way to pick 99, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick111 Rnd4 Luke Kandra
They did well to land Luke Kandra in slot 111, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick137 Rnd4 Demetrius Knight Jr.
Demetrius Knight Jr. in the 137th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick185 Rnd6 Ryan Fitzgerald
Ryan Fitzgerald at the 185th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick226 Rnd7 James Burnip
They barely believed it either: James Burnip still on the board at No. 226. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick230 Rnd7 Ollie Gordon II
They robbed the room for Ollie Gordon II here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick249 Rnd7 Jack Kiser
Circle this one: Jack Kiser at pick 249 is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Pick255 Rnd7 Joey Slackman
Joey Slackman at the 255th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
