normmynorm DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Good, not great, for the 49ers: B-. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Baylor Cupp at the 251st overall pick, a reach of 95 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
Cooper DeJean in slot 31 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick63
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
No edge and no loss on Kingsley Suamataia in pick 63; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brenden Rice. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick124
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 124 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick131
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
A straight-up fair deal on Mohamed Kamara at the 131st pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick133
Rnd4
Trevor Keegan
A reach on Trevor Keegan in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick176
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Frank Gore Jr.. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
Jaylan Ford in Round 6, Pick 36 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick215
Rnd6
Andrew Raym
Andrew Raym in slot 215 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick251
Rnd7
Baylor Cupp
Baylor Cupp at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
