FutureD
Best value of the weekend goes to the 49ers for Ward: B+. Somebody in pick No. 189 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Cam Ward, the No. 7 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The 49ers indulged a want in Barron while a need in edge rusher stayed open.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Myles Garrett deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Travis Hunter
Circle this one: Travis Hunter at No. 33 is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick45
Rnd2
Grey Zabel
They read the board right and Grey Zabel was the payoff at the 45th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
You do not let a linebacker like Jihaad Campbell reach pick No. 75 and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick94
Rnd3
Malaki Starks
They will replay Malaki Starks at slot 94 for years; that is how good the value is. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jahdae Barron
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher to take Jahdae Barron, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick112
Rnd4
Armand Membou
Armand Membou in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick125
Rnd4
Walter Nolen
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Walter Nolen in pick 125, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick133
Rnd4
Colston Loveland
Taking Colston Loveland in the 133rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Pick138
Rnd4
Tre Harris
Tre Harris at pick No. 138 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick139
Rnd4
Marcus Mbow
Marcus Mbow in slot 139 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick189
Rnd6
Cam Ward
They barely believed it either: Cam Ward still on the board at the Round 6 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Pick206
Rnd6
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo in Round 6, Pick 28 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick208
Rnd6
Xavier Restrepo
A wide receiver of that caliber at No. 208 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick228
Rnd7
Omarr Norman-Lott
Omarr Norman-Lott at the 228th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
