Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B+
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureB
The Commanders let Cowing fall into their laps, and walked away with a B+.

The Commanders did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Jacob Cowing fell into the 186th pick. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.

The cost of the Bortolini reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Solomon pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and interior defensive lineman.

They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
In No. 27 they get protection for the quarterback. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick34 Rnd2 Bo Nix
A tidy little value on Bo Nix in the 34th pick, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick36 Rnd2 Jordan Morgan
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Morgan. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick40 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
A straight-up fair deal on Cooper Beebe at Round 2, Pick 8, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick67 Rnd3 Cade Stover
No edge and no loss on Cade Stover in pick 67; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick78 Rnd3 Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at pick No. 78 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick90 Rnd3 Ja'Lynn Polk
A slide stopped in the 90th overall pick, with Ja'Lynn Polk worth more than the price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick100 Rnd3 Javon Solomon
A surprising call. With edge rusher and interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent the 100th overall pick on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick103 Rnd4 Caelen Carson
Caelen Carson slid further than he should have, and the Round 4 slot is lovely value for the cornerback. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick139 Rnd5 Jaylin Simpson
Fair-plus on Jaylin Simpson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick152 Rnd5 Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini at pick No. 152 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick186 Rnd6 Jacob Cowing
They barely believed it either: Jacob Cowing still on the board at pick 186. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick222 Rnd7 Kimani Vidal
Kimani Vidal at No. 222 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
