Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall

FutureA+
The Commanders fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A-. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Eric Gentry, 34 picks early at pick No. 228.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Pearsall.
A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want. The Commanders indulged a want in Abrams-Draine while a need in cornerback, quarterback and other spots stayed open.
Bottom line, with Kris Abrams-Draine leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick36
Rnd2
Kris Abrams-Draine
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went defensive back with Kris Abrams-Draine while clear needs at cornerback, quarterback and other spots sat open.
Pick39
Rnd2
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul in No. 39 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick56
Rnd2
Jack Sawyer
A premium they did not need to pay, Jack Sawyer a notch or two before his time. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick71
Rnd3
Maason Smith
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in Round 3, Pick 7 leaves cornerback, quarterback and other spots for later.
Pick88
Rnd3
Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell at slot 88 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 100th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick107
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
They paid up for Jaheim Bell at the 107th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick144
Rnd5
Ricky Pearsall
Ricky Pearsall in No. 144 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick185
Rnd6
Raheim Sanders
Nothing to complain about; Raheim Sanders went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick228
Rnd7
Eric Gentry
Eric Gentry in Round 7, Pick 8 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
