FutureB
Quarterback settled, Ward in the fold, and a D for the Giants. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Giants started one anyway for Fadil Diggs, 84 picks ahead of schedule.
Whatever Cam Ward becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. However the rest shakes out, Pegues at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick5
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback at fair value.
Pick42
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
You do not let a linebacker like Jalon Walker reach slot 42 and blink. They did not. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick54
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Somehow Malaki Starks was still sitting there in pick 54, and they pounced on premier safety value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick65
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
No drama and no debate, Maxwell Hairston went about where he belonged in No. 65. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick70
Rnd3
Tate Ratledge
By-the-book stuff, Tate Ratledge at the 70th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick87
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger slipping to the 87th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jamaree Caldwell
Jamaree Caldwell in the Round 3 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick105
Rnd4
Terrance Ferguson
Terrance Ferguson at pick 105 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick107
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
The board fumbled Cam Skattebo all the way to pick No. 107, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick110
Rnd4
David Walker
A straight-up fair deal on David Walker at the 110th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick154
Rnd5
Que Robinson
Que Robinson in Round 5, Pick 16 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick159
Rnd5
Fadil Diggs
Fadil Diggs at the 159th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick194
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dont'e Thornton Jr. at No. 194. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick219
Rnd7
JJ Pegues
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at slot 219 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick237
Rnd7
Kitan Crawford
Kitan Crawford in the Round 7 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick246
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
A reasonable price with a little left over, Isaac TeSlaa in No. 246. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
