Ward is the Giants' new face under center. Grade: B. The Giants treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending slot 159 on Fernando Carmona a full 87 spots early.
Whatever Cam Ward becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. That Lawson pick is the receipt they will wave around later. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Cam Ward
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
Pick33
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with Omarion Hampton worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
Pick66
Rnd3
Hollin Pierce
Hollin Pierce at pick 66 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick102
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
They robbed the room for Malachi Moore here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick134
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Jake Majors in the 134th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick142
Rnd5
Deontae Lawson
Somehow Deontae Lawson was still sitting there in pick No. 142, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick159
Rnd5
Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona at pick No. 159 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick218
Rnd7
Antonio Williams
Antonio Williams at No. 218 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick245
Rnd7
Jake Briningstool
Jake Briningstool in the Round 7 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick256
Rnd7
Stone Handy
Stone Handy at the 256th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
