Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureB-
The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Newton: D.

The 49ers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.

The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If Milton III pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

On value alone, Newton makes the weekend a net positive. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Troy Franklin
In No. 31 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick36 Rnd2 Amarius Mims
Amarius Mims in Round 2, Pick 4 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick37 Rnd2 Jer'Zhan Newton
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Jer'Zhan Newton in pick 37, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick63 Rnd2 Cooper DeJean
Fair-plus on Cooper DeJean, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick80 Rnd3 Ladd McConkey
Nice patience on Ladd McConkey, who had no business lasting to pick No. 80. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick94 Rnd3 Kiran Amegadjie
No drama and no debate, Kiran Amegadjie went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick98 Rnd3 Will Shipley
Will Shipley at the 98th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick116 Rnd4 Beau Brade
Beau Brade in No. 116 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick131 Rnd4 Smael Mondon Jr.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Smael Mondon Jr.. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick177 Rnd6 Joe Milton III
They went early on Joe Milton III in the 177th pick, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick209 Rnd6 Jase McClellan
They took Jase McClellan at par in pick No. 209, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick213 Rnd6 Aki Ogunbiyi
By-the-book stuff, Aki Ogunbiyi at slot 213 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick215 Rnd6 Marques Cox
Marques Cox in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick252 Rnd7 Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman at pick 252 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
